Ah, Valentines Day… For most it’s a day of wine and roses, but for cynics like Ryan and Chris, it’s a day of ice cream, late night television, and sobbing. Rather than pouting, like have done on every other Valentine’s Day, the duo decided to try to woo the ladies by showing their softer side.

This Week’s Game: Valentines Day Card!
Ryan and Chris get romantic and create Valentine’s Day cards.

Ryan: “Happy Valentine’s Day!” said the saddest boy on earth. I went with a pretty literal interpretation of “I heart you,” and even though it’s been done a million times before I still wanted to give it a go. I used my new Stylist pen, a Micron brush pen, and Cottman travel watercolor set. I also topped it off with a little Photoshop. About midway through this drawing I completely understood why I am single.

Chris: Sometimes when I talk to my mother, she says, “Chris, why can’t you find a nice girl to spend time with?” I think we now have our answer. I must say I’m bear-y ashamed of myself for making this hacky joke (both in the card and the pun contained in this sentence). Regardless, I’ve also made cards that you can print out, fold, and give to your special someone. And, just so no one feels left out, there are two versions so you can pick based on your taste in companion…

“Mitt Zombie” Was Already Taken!

I feel like I should give you the backstory on this one, ‘cuz it’s a little weird. See, Chris was thinking of what to draw for this week and, randomly, “Mitt Zombie” popped into his head. Chris said, “That’s super funny! I’m a genius!” and immediately texted the idea to Ryan. Ryan responded with a text saying, “I’m 100% on board!” Suddenly, Chris thought, “Wait… This idea may be too obvious.” He quickly googled “Mitt Zombie” and, sure enough, someone out there in internet-land had beaten him to the punch. Alas! It was too late for Ryan and Chris to change the week’s theme, and were thus forced to execute this ridiculous game…

This Week’s Game: Political Creeps!
In this game, Ryan and Chris draw today’s political candidates as if they were movie monsters.

Ryan: Since all politicians are monsters already, I didn’t feel I had to change anyone too much. Doesn’t Ron Paul just look like he belongs among the deceased?? That’s why I made him Ron Paulbearer. Please, no applause necessary. I just whipped up a quick ink drawing and plopped it on Photoshop. Boom.

Chris: You ever have one of those jokes that sounds good in your head, but after you say it you realize that it’s not really funny? This is a prime example. I was thinking of mashing up Herman Cain and Herman Munster, but I think the joke needs more work (as does my likeness of Herman Cain).

Okay dude, seriously, why was Wikipedia shut down the other day?! I was trying to look up some information about My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic, but I kept getting redirected to some page complaining about SOAP and PEE PEE? C’mon Wikipdeida, grow up. Soap is a good thing — especially after you go pee pee. And soap is really great if you’re like me and go pee pee in the shower.

This Week’s Game: Madly In Anger With You!
In this game Ryan and Chris illustrate something that annoys the crap out of them. Being the cynical jerkfaces they are, I get the feeling Ryan and Chris will repeat this game several times…

Ryan: We were to draw something we hate. Now for me, the list is endless. My decision to illustrate someone not picking up after their dog came right around the time I stepped in some dog poo this week. I hate discourteous people. Just like Hannibal Lecter. And this is just one of the reasons why.

Chris: Why does it seems like every time I get behind the wheel, every single butt-hole, crappy-driver decides to start driving at the exact same time?! Now, I’m generally a nice, pleasant, happy-go-lucky person (Note: Previous statement is a complete lie…), but, seriously… WHY ARE YOU GOING 25 MPH IN A 40 ON A ONE LANE ROAD?! Stupid old people. I will kill your face with an upper-cut.

Feed Me Seymour!

Say what?! On-time updates for two weeks in a row? This must be some sort of freak phenomena. In his press release, Ryan Connolly stated, “We hope to continue this streak of regular updates until 2013, or until the world ends… Whichever happens first.” Chris Fenoglio, however, could not be reached for comment. It is believed that he is sulking because Ryan’s drawing was so much nicer. What a little wuss.

This Week’s Game: Random Word Challenge!
In this game we try to create an image based off of 3 random words: one noun, one adjective, and one verb. Words are chosen from an online random word generator.
This Week’s Words: Green, Suitable, Call

Ryan: I struggled at first deciding what to do but eventually came upon the idea to draw some bizarre carnivorous plant. The plant represents green, the ferocity of the plant represents its suitability for nature, and the plant is calling out to the fly… to eat it I suppose. Although a plant like this would reasonably need much more sustenance than one measly fly… so I dunno what I was thinking there. I drew this with different Deleter pens, from .005 mm to a thick marker head. The paper I used was this cool recycled paper I bought in Costa Rica many moons ago. Enjoy.

Chris: Um, possibly one of my weirder drawings lately. It was originally gonna be a frog, but a friend of mine said a crocodile would be cooler. Truth is that I got the newest version of Photoshop, and I wanted to try some digital painting — If for no other reason than to remind myself that I’m terrible at painting…

Resolutions!

I would’ve posted these a few days ago, but it took until now to get rid of my New Years Eve hangover. Who knew drinking 47 apple-tinis would be so brutal?

This Week’s Game: New Years Resolution Revolution!
It’s a new year! Time to make with the resolutions.

Ryan: My new year’s resolutions are to talk less, listen more, and… of course… buy an owl. If only one of these resolutions is followed through I will be a happy man. We all know I’m referring to the owl. I really want an owl. Anyway, this drawing is pencil, 6H, H, 3B, and 7B.

Chris: My resolution is to cut down to four super-models at a time. What can I say? I’m getting a little older, and it’s time to slow it down a little bit. Sadly, I’m probably not gonna keep this resolution…

Smurf-a-roo!

Holy monkeys was that a busy semester. Ryan and Chris had to take turns talking each other off the edges of very tall things, but they both made it through relatively unscathed (Chris has a black eye, but that was because he said something crass about Ryan’s cat). Sadly, they were forced to back burner Doodleheadz for a little bit, but now that the semester is over, THEY’RE BACK, BABY!

This Week’s Game: Smurfy Jobs!
In this game we try to create terrible jobs for those little socialist imps.

Ryan: His name is Skidmark Smurf. He’s the town drug dealer who specializes in powder cocaine. I used ink and colored pencil just to mix things up. i think we can all agree that smurfs are likely on some type of drug (Note from Chris: Duh! Smurf-berry juice!).

Chris: Did you know that all natural Smurfs are men? It’s true! Smurfette was magically created by Gargamel to somehow destroy the Smurfs (I’m a little fuzzy on the details, but Papa Smurf changed her into a good guy). Later on the show introduced a few other female Smurf characters, but originally, she was the only female Smurf. Because I know that useless tidbit of information, I started thinking of jobs that only she could do and couldn’t think of anything better than serving chicken wings (or washing dishes or something…).

Ryan and Chris’ Big Adventure!

This week Ryan and Chris ventured out of the relative safety of their homes to both darken their pale complexions and try to meet girls. Though they failed at both of those goals, they did do some drawing!

This Week’s Game: Sketch Crawl!
Chris and Ryan go to public places to sketch random people/places/objects from life.

Ryan: Sketchcrawls are always a blast, and this was no exception. I drew with a 01 micron and a brush pen– a lethal combo. The rain may have put a damper on the day, but not on our spirits. I’m not going to lie… I was pretty angry that it rained so much, but we made the best of it and hopefully next time the heavens will have mercy on us.

Chris: Yeah, that rain was pretty silly, so we ended up going to a bar at the end. I was sitting across from Ryan and had nothing else to draw, so I started drawing Ryan from across the table. He immediately noticed and called me a jerk-face. I cried a lot after that. I was using a Micron 03 pen and a Faber Castell Brush pen for these.

Gnumming Bird

Little late with this update, but it’s totally Ryan’s fault. Well, sorta. See, Ryan gave Chris his image ready to post by Tuesday, Chris however was too busy drinking alcohol and partying with his stuffed animals to update the site and/or draw his picture. But since Chris is the one who actually updates all these posts, he can blame whoever he wants. Thus, it’s all Ryan’s fault and we all hate him…

Quick note! We’re going to start updating this site on Thursdays rather than Mondays. It’s only because Chris is super busy at the beginning of the week and can never get his work done on time. Still, somehow it’s all Ryan’s fault.

This Week’s Game: Unnatural Freaks of Nature!
In this game we combine two or more species of animals in order to create a more ridiculous/useless/hilarious animal.

Ryan: I had a lot of ideas for useless animal combos, but I eventually went with narwhal hummingbird because it was funny to picture an animal hindering its own ability to fly.

Chris: I originally wanted to do a whale/rat, but I figured that’d be way too difficult to draw — a whale being so large and a rat so small. So, I decided to do a fish and a rat. I also figured that combining their lower features would make them extra useless and stupid.

The Bicycle Menace

Well, against all odds, we’ve made it to week 2! Take that all you nay-sayers! Mom, I’m specifically talking to you.

Ryan: I thought of a fashionable person throwing a ticket in a cop’s face. That idea somehow turned into this. But who doesn’t love drawing these old-time bicycles? I’m getting used to a brush pen and thought this would be good practice. It wasn’t.

Chris: I remember when Phantom Menace came out… I was, like, a sophomore in high school, and me and my family went to see it opening night (at my insistence, of course). For some reason the movie opened on Wednesday or something, so I had to go to school the next day. I was in class (French I believe) and somehow the topic of the new Star Wars movie came up. I said I had seen it and that it really wasn’t very good, and some girl (whose name escapes me, mostly because I don’t give a crap) said to me, “What!? You’re lying! It has to be awesome.”

Later on I was sitting in study hall and the same girl wandered in to talk to one of her friends. I don’t think she noticed me, but, again, she started talking about the new Star Wars movie. She says, “Some guy in my French class said it wasn’t good.” Her friend said, “Really? Who said that?” And she responded, “I dunno. Some a-hole.”

WHAT A B*TCH, RIGHT?!

This, among other things, is why I have no plans on going to my 10 year reunion. That being said, I think I have some issues to work out.

In terms of drawing this piece, I really just wanted to work on my crappy inking — specifically with technical pens and templates. It’s not going well…

The Beginning

Often exchanging spiteful glances in the halls of the Academy Art University in San Francisco, Ryan Connolly and Chris Fenoglio had mutual hate-miration for each other. A brutal war raged for maybe an hour or so before the two realized that the world would not survive the coming battle between their different artistic styles. The two titanically talented artists decided to put aside their difference and use their artistic abilities to usher in a new utopia for all of humanity. Thus was the birth of…
The DoodleHeadz.
Each week the duo will create a drawing based off of a drawing game or theme. They will then present their images to you, the wonderful audience, for adulation and awe.

Ryan: What immediately came to mind for me was chestnuts flowing on a conveyor belt. and when i had to think of what might cancel them for some reason radioactivity popped into mind…

Chris: I was having problems figuring out an image for this until I tried to put the words together in a real sentence, “Chestnut cancelled flowing” — squirrel in the rain… Done. I now know that is a walnut shell and not a chestnut shell, but I guess that’s what I get for not doing research before I start a drawing. Oops.
